DESCRIPTION:
Alto saxophonist Gary Bartz's first release on his OYO label is an exciting live set featuring his working group at the time, pianist Barney McAll, bassist Kenny Davis, and drummer Greg Bandy. This recording represents a typical club set for Bartz's group, as the music flows from one tune to the next, never stopping until the set ends. Walter Davis, Jr.'s "Uranus" is the opener, beginning with a sax/piano intro, then becoming an up-tempo burner. The exotic "Eastern Blues" is next, followed by the standard "But Not for Me," beginning with an out of tempo intro by the group, and changing into a medium swinger. Billy Strayhorn's beautiful ballad "Daydream" is next, and the set ends with another up-tempo burner, "Soulstice." As expected, Bartz is featured throughout, his big sound and aggressive attack showing why he is considered one of the leading alto saxophonists on the jazz scene. This is an excellent beginning to Bartz's record label.
